Dave Smith/Business Insider Thousands of thoughts pop into our heads every minute of the day. 'I need to do laundry today.' 'That big work project is coming up, I should spend some time on that.' 'I'm on dinner duty tonight. What should I make?' 'Crap, I forgot to call my dad yesterday.'
Apple iOS: If you want to create an iPhone app using the iOS platform, you'll need to shell out about $99, which isn't much considering the elegance and functionality of the program. Organize your day with To-Do's smart Suggestions and complete the most important tasks or chores you need to get done, every day. To-Do syncs between your phone and computer, so you can access your to-dos from school, the office, or the grocery store or even while you're traveling around the world.
There are plenty of apps to categorize your to-dos, but there aren't many apps that can help categorize your whole life: including your to-dos, but also your random thoughts, ideas, projects, and areas of your life, like work, friends, and family. Things 3, from the Germany-based software startup Cultured Code, is a 2017 Apple Design award-winning app for organizing your life that's both simple and robust. It works across Apple devices only right now (sorry Android and PC users), but if you have at least one-Apple made product it's probably worth your consideration. Thanks to Cultured Code, which provided me with review codes to try Things 3 on my Apple devices, I can confidently say that Things 3 is remarkable organization tool.
It's great for jotting down quick thoughts that come along, but it's really best for tackling more complex projects — like planning vacations, learning a new language, and especially prioritizing your various work tasks. I've spent a few months importing my entire life into Things 3 — here's what it's like to use the app, and why you should consider buying it. . APPLE DESIGN AWARD WINNER 2017. Meet the all-new Things!
A complete rethinking of the original, award-winning task manager – with a perfect balance between simplicity and power, incredible new features, delightful interactions, and a timeless new design. HERE'S HOW THINGS WORKS If you're new to Things, this is the basic workflow: 1. Collect Your Thoughts Get things off your mind quickly with Things’ action extension – it lets you create to-dos from other apps.
Or just talk to Siri on any device (“Remind me to.”) and import from Reminders. Get Organized Create a project for each of your goals, then add the steps to reach them. For clarity, add structure with headings. Then group your projects by areas of responsibility, such as “Family”, “Work”, or “Health”. Review these regularly to stay on top of things. Plan Your Time See your calendar events alongside your to-dos and plan your time effectively. Create repeating to-dos for things you do every few days, weeks, or months – Things will remind you on the right day.
Make the Most of Your Day Every morning, grab a coffee and prepare your list for “Today”: review previously planned to-dos and make quick decisions on what to tackle. Pick some more steps from your projects and then get going. The Today list is the only place you’ll need to look for the rest of the day.
Customize Your Workflow Use tags to categorize your to-dos or add context. For example, tag places like “Office” or “Home”, or tag all your “Errands”, or everything you’re working on with “Kate”.
You can easily find everything you’ve tagged via filtering or search. HERE'S WHY WE THINK YOU'LL LOVE THINGS 1. It stays out of your way. As you start using Things, you’ll quickly notice how seamlessly all the features fit together to give you an uncluttered, focused experience. There are no unnecessary frills. No pointless gimmicks or useless controls.
In fact, you’ll hardly notice the app – it’s just you and your to-dos. Everything revolves around your to-dos. In Things, each of your to-dos are special. In a list, they simply show a checkbox and the title of your to-do. But when you open them, they extend into a beautiful white piece of paper that’s ready to hold your thoughts. Additional details (checklists, tags, reminders, deadline) are nicely tucked away in the corner until you need them. It’s got a touch of magic.
Things removes friction in magical ways. Take the new Magic Plus Button that lets you insert to-dos at any place in a list – simply via drag and drop.
Or the ease at which you can multi-select and operate on many to-dos at once. Or the natural language date parser: just type “tomorrow”, “in 4 days', or “next Wednesday', and it will jump to all the right conclusions. It’s got all the power of iOS.
Things is fully integrated with all the latest iOS technologies: Apple Watch, Calendars, Siri & Reminders, Today Widget, Quick Actions, Action Extension, Handoff, and Notifications. And much more. Everyone's got their favorite feature, it's impossible to list them all. See what our users love about Things – visit our website at: thingsapp.com WHAT’S NEW? This is a truly incredible update, with dozens of powerful new features. See the “What’s New” section below for a full list.

Things 3.7 is packed with great new features for iOS 12 and watchOS 5 – including support for Siri Shortcuts, the Siri watch face and new watch, Dynamic Notifications, Password AutoFill, and Landscape Mode for iPhone.
SIRI SHORTCUTS On iOS 12, you can use the new Siri Shortcuts feature. Siri will determine common actions you perform inside of Things and suggest them as shortcuts on your Lock screen, like “Show Today” or “Add To-Do”. But you can also build your own shortcuts in Things’ settings and record a voice trigger for them. Here are a few examples of what shortcuts can do:.
Build your own Quick Entry Record shortcuts for different things you enter often, like Errands or Movies you want to watch. Every time you invoke these shortcuts (e.g. “Hey Siri, add an errand”), Things opens to reveal a new to-do, with all the relevant details pre-filled, like tags, the list it should go to, etc. – all that’s left for you to do is enter the title and hit save. Ready-made to-dos Create shortcuts for adding to-dos that are always exactly the same, like a packing list, or your favorite recipe.
When you invoke the shortcut, Things adds it in the background. Quick access to lists Record shortcuts to open particular lists, like Today, Upcoming, a project you’re working on, your Work area, and so on. You can also specify a tag that the list should be filtered by when it opens. Build Workflows Any shortcut can also be used in Apple’s new Shortcuts app, which allows you to combine multiple shortcuts from different apps into one workflow. DYNAMIC NOTIFICATIONS When you get a notification, tap the Snooze button and you’ll notice that you now have granular control over the duration of the snooze: 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour.
PASSWORD AUTOFILL Things supports iOS 12’s new Password AutoFill feature. It creates a strong password for you, keeps it safe, and automatically enters it for you when you log in on a new device. All of this now works with Things Cloud. APPLE WATCH We’ve added full support for watchOS 5. You’ll notice Things now appears on the Siri watch face; it shows the next to-do from your Today list, and how many to-dos are left for the day. We’ve built four great new complications for the new Infograph watch faces.
LANDSCAPE MODE Things now supports landscape mode on the iPhone:) For more information about Things 3.7 check our blog (thingsapp.com). We hope you enjoy these new features! —— New in Things 3.7.5 ——.

Improved stability and bug fixes. 3.5 Apr 17, 2018. Things 3 has been out for a while now and we’ve received lots of fantastic feedback – thank you so much! For today’s release, we took a close look at all your suggestions and revisited many areas of the app to polish it up. The result is Things 3.5 – a “Spit and Polish” release that combines 29 great little features and improvements into one big update.
AREAS — Now Collapsable! Without a doubt, collapsable areas has been one of our most requested features. If your project list is super long – or if you just don’t want to see work projects on the weekend – collapse your areas to hide them. TAGGING. We’ve made the tags window searchable on iOS. Just pull down and start typing to find the tag you want. We’ve made app-wide tag searches broader.
When you search for a tag, you won’t just see items with that tag, but also items with its nested tags. A feature from Things 2 has also made a comeback: you can once again filter by “No Tag”. INPUT/OUTPUT — Copy & Paste Magic. Paste text from other apps into Things to create new to-dos (multiple lines of text will create multiple to-dos).
Paste multiple lines of text into the title field of a to-do; the first line is the title, the rest goes into the notes. New on Mac: Copy to-dos, headings, or projects and paste them into other apps. New on Mac: Copy to-dos, projects, or headings and paste them into other lists within Things. New on Mac: Drag text into a Things window to create new to-dos (you can also drag files from Finder, people from Contacts, emails from Mail, etc.). New on Mac: Move items to other lists by hitting Cmd+C and then using the new “Move Here” shortcut: Cmd+Option+V. On iOS, you’ll find the new paste option in the top right corner under the (v) menu.

Coarserocks, Incredible Of all the countless apps that I use, and of all the endless hundreds of apps I’ve downloaded over the last 8 years since I first got an iPhone, I think this app has improved my quality of life more than any other. It is a fantastic tool for sitting down with yourself in the morning and being clear on what you have to spend your time doing that day. It’s also great to return to quickly every hour or two to update everything you’ve done, maybe zoom in on just a certain subject, or to add new tasks when they come up. I probably open this app at least a dozen times a day.
I’m a student and being able to organize assignments by subject and enter deadlines and have a ‘Notes’ field is amazing. I haven’t used the checklist feature yet within a task but I feel like I will. This new version is definitely an improvement over Things 2. First of all it looks amazing, which matters more to me than it probably should. Also the workflow feels a bit simpler, and I find it more streamlined mentally to add a new item quickly before the details go flying out of your head.
$30 for the iPhone + iPad apps is definitely an investment compared to most other app prices, but honestly $30 for great software is not that big a deal, seems pretty fair really for how much work has clearly gone into this over the years and considering how much easier it makes my life by keeping me more organized and more aware of how I’m spending my time. MilkdotWhole, Great App for College This is an amazing app! If you take the time to use this, it’s worth the money and I use it for groceries, wish lists, and college assignments. It’s awesome for college assignments because I have an assignments list with headers for each course. My main issue that keeps this from being 5 stars is Siri shortcuts and Siri integration in general. Compared to something like my weather app that shows weather within the Siri lockscreen, things forces itself to open in order to add a todo or to show a list of you decide to use Siri shortcuts. The only way to access things info through the Siri display is by saying something like “hey Siri, show my list in things” which is super finicky compared to a Siri shortcut that says “hey Siri, show my list”.
One gives you a Siri result and the other asks you to unlock your face to open the app. This should be addressed as it breaks the flow of what Siri shortcuts and integration should be.
Otherwise, this app actually does what it’s supposed to and that’s to keep your head forward at what’s important, and as an undergrad student with 18 hours worth of nonsense and programming languages, I can confirm this app does its job well. 10/10 would throw money at again.
